Music On The Internet
Another Stage For Mastering

Music on the Internet.

It's everywhere.

Where radio stations and video channels used to be the prime source for new music, web audio has given the listener more choices than ever before.

From social networking to online stores with preview options, there's more variety, and also a lot more diverse range of sound quality levels as well.

With so many choices it can be a bit bewildering for newbies getting started.

Here's a roadmap for getting your audio ready and up on the Internet.

I'd like to thank the friendly folks at TEA South for providing all the information for this subject.

The first step is to set up a page on MySpace. This will provide info about your band and music, networking opportunities with other artists, and links to where people can buy your CD.

This is where you'll be posting your music.

Before you do, however, there are some additional pointers regarding your web audio files that you should consider after they're mastered, one being using a higher bit rate like 256 wherever possible.

It's recommended that you start with only 3 to 5 songs to begin with, too.

If you are considering selling physical copies of your CD you'll need to purchase a bar code.

Next, you should set up an account with CD Baby. Here are some things that will get taken care of:

  • They will get your music on the Internet by uploading your files to all online sites that will sell your music, like Rhapsody and iTunes.
  • They will get your music to all online stores, like Amazon, that sell your CD.

But you will need your bar code, and CD Baby can help you with that too.

And once that's done, you'll post these links to your MySpace page so people will know where to purchase your music.

For artists who have their own website or who want to submit to online radio, things can get a bit more involved. It's often best to use services like TEA South that will do this for you.

Web audio has changed the way people interact with music. Even for me, I'm often asked to just provide a data CD/DVD of mastered files and mp3's, instead of a finished CD master.

Music on the Internet has opened the door for more variety of styles than ever before. From obscure to more individual and unique ones that the major labels would never consider signing on. It's given talented artists a greater chance to get heard than they ever would have previously.
